Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Coverage stepping in when a driver with no insurance or too little causes injury to the insured.
Overview
Roughly one in eight US drivers carries no insurance, with some states near one in five, which makes this a major protection decision. It also covers injuries from hit and run drivers in many states. Insurers must offer it in most states and several require it, often at the same limits as liability unless rejected in writing. Claims against one own insurer can still involve negotiation or arbitration, since the carrier stands where the at fault driver stood and defends accordingly. Stacking the coverage across multiple vehicles on a policy, allowed in some states, multiplies limits for a modest premium.
