Claims Adjusters
The professionals who investigate claims, verify coverage, value damage, and negotiate settlements.
Overview
Staff adjusters work for insurers, independent adjusters contract to carriers especially in catastrophe surges, and public adjusters work for policyholders for a fee, often near 10 percent of recovery, licensed in most states. After hurricanes, adjusters from across the country pour into affected zones, and state insurance departments regulate licensing, conduct, and prompt payment statutes with interest penalties for late handling. Estimating software standardizes building claims pricing. Adjusters gather statements, photos, repair bids, medical records, and incident reports, weigh actual cash value against replacement arguments, and issue reservation of rights letters when coverage is uncertain. Their discretion in negotiation makes a documented proof of loss the policyholder best tool.
