General Liability Insurance
The foundational commercial policy covering third party bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury.
Overview
It responds to claims arising from business premises, operations, products, and completed work, and under standard forms the insurer duty to defend adds legal costs on top of limits. It does not cover the business own property, employee injuries, or professional errors, which sit in other policies. Limits of 1 million per occurrence and 2 million aggregate are the common small business buy. Contractors, retailers, and offices buy it by default, and landlords require certificates naming them as additional insureds, extending coverage to the property owner for events tied to the tenant work. Occurrence forms, the norm, respond to when injury happens, so coverage decisions echo for decades.
